Echelon Construction on Hold
 Channel 13 Action News

It is the latest victim of our nation's weakening economy.

A
s of Friday, construction has stopped on Echelon.
The decision to stop work on Echelon comes after lower than expected profits last quarter, and a slow down in the gaming industry.  Boyd Gaming's $4.8 billion project is officially on hold until our nation's financial climate improves.  The company announced August 1, 2008 that it is going to hold off on the project for at least a year.  Boyd planned to put up a massive four hotel development on the huge 87-acre site of the old Stardust.

They (had) planned to open Echelon by the end of 2010.

Boyd Gaming is the first company to pull the plug on a planned mega-resort.  Echelon's announcement shows that Las Vegas is no longer recession-proof.  It is a big setback for our economic plans, in terms of gaming revenues that Nevada desperately needs.  Also, a lot of people were counting on the jobs Echelon would offer.

Keith Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer of Boyd Gaming says "While we remain enthusiastic about the long-term prospects for the Las Vegas market and Echelon, this is the right decision for our company at this time."

Just a thought... Maybe they should have waited to blow up the Stardust???
